The room I’ll be making over is…drum roll please…Kaylee’s bedroom!

In case you’re not yet acquainted, “Kaylee Golightly” is my sweet peach of a niece who lives in Texas. You can see her here, herehere, here, here and here and even follow her on Instagram. But enough about the apple of my eye…

Let’s get to the before pics, shall we?

One Room Challenge Week 1: Before Pics + The Plan!

BEFORE

As you can see, her room looks like a lot of tween rooms. A mishmash of things from when she was much younger mixed in with some cast-off furniture. I’m THRILLED to be able to give her this room makeover!

About a week before Linda from the ORC and I connected, my sister had told me she wanted to update Kaylee’s room. Kaylee’s friend had come over and was surprised that Kaylee’s room really didn’t really reflect her personality. And Kaylee had been wanting to change things up already.

But they weren’t sure where to start. My sister told Kaylee to call her Aunt Kelly (that’s me!) since interior design is something I love. My Dad, Kaylee’s Grandpa, had already said he wanted to gift her new carpet and paint, but they needed advice on what colors to pick.

So, I was really happy to be able to say: Let’s do more than just carpet and paint. Let’s give Kaylee the room of her dreams!  So…the room is about 12×12 and this is the view as you walk in the door.

She’s had these same baby pink walls since she was a baby. She’s now 12. Impossible, I know. Let me wipe away my tears and regroup…

STEP ONE

As with any client, my first step was asking Kaylee what she needed and wanted.

KAYLEE’S REQUESTS:

Closet doors – maybe with mirrors on them
Queen bed + tufted headboard
Vanity
New blinds
Leave at least one window open/not covered by furniture
Bigger bookshelf (she LOVES to read which makes my heart swell!)

INSPIRATION

My next step was having Kaylee create a Pinterest board of rooms she likes. I was VERY happy when she came back with this:

Yes to a mostly white backdrop! That will instantly freshen up the room. And I love a good faux fur throw, pillow — you name it. Kaylee and I have a lot in common. Like me, she’s very sensitive. She likes soft things. Clearly she likes fairy lights too. So I’ll try to find a way to weave those in…

LAYOUT

Luckily my hubby Fred Baby has a program where he can layout and render a room. He did this for our house when it became The Christopher Kennedy Modernism Week Show House (aka Villa Golightly) and it was SO helpful in making decisions. This room really has been a family affair so far.

As you can see here, I want to re-orient the bed.

And swap out the high dresser for a lower, longer dresser.

3d rendering of a bedroom with television and furniture

I also want to put folding doors on the closet. They won’t take up as much space as full doors, but will be so much better than sliding doors, so she’ll be able to see her whole closet at once. The bookcase will remain in the same location but will be taller to accommodate more books.

3d rendering of a bedroom with bed and table

To the right of her bed, we plan to put a vanity.

3d rendering of a bedroom with window, bed, and chair

Room permitting, we’ll put a fun chair in the corner by the windows. The tall desk/hutch currently there was blocking one window, so this will give much better light.

So, that’s the plan!

What do you think? Any suggestions/tips/questions? Let me know in the comments.

And stay tuned next week to see how it all unfolds!
