Feeling stuck? Unmotivated? Like you don’t know what you’re doing with your life and why you’re doing it? I’ve been feeling that way a lot lately too. Here’s the surprising thing that helped…

Feeling stuck? Take an Inspiration Vacation | Kelly Golightly

An inspiration vacation.

A what?

Truth be told, I didn’t know I was going on an inspiration vacation when we accepted an offer to stay at the Aven in downtown LA.

Rather, it was an invitation to Joy’s surprise birthday party that happened to coincide with an offer to stay at the Aven. A happy accident, if you will.

Go Somewhere Unexpected

I’ll be 100% honest. I’ve never liked downtown LA. There’s so much there I don’t typically like: crowds, grittiness, the fact that it’s not Palm Springs or Beverly Hills.

But Fred Baby and I both found ourselves feeling really inspired. Probably because it’s the exact opposite of our daily lives + what we typically like.

Don’t get me wrong, we are extremely fortunate to live our daily lives where and how we do. But like with anything and anywhere, you can easily fall into a rut. And then you start feeling unmotivated and taking things for granted.

Our Inspiration Vacation

On our Inspiration Vacation, we were reinvigorated by city living. It made us ponder our fun days of living in New York. To get a place there again? Maybe…maybe not. To get a place in downtown LA? Perhaps…

That’s the fun thing about an Inspiration Vacation.

It gets the wheels spinning. You start seeing things with new eyes and new clarity. Possibilities pop up, as do vibrant pink murals.

How To Take an Inspiration Vacation

If you’re feeling a little stuck or low, I really recommend an Inspiration Vacation. It doesn’t even need to be an overnight trip. A day trip to a different neighborhood can even do the trick.

And oddly, going somewhere you wouldn’t typically think you’d like can be the most interesting and memorable Inspiration Vacation you can take.

I know Fred Baby and I always remember things that went wrong more than things that went right (in a good that-makes-a-funny-story kind of way).

It also reminds me of something my friend Jon (who officiated our wedding) once shared that he had heard: If you’re feeling depressed, try doing the opposite of what you normally would do. In his case, he was even eating foods he didn’t like. And going out dancing to all hours of the night (and he never dances).

In my case, it was exploring a neighborhood I thought I hated. Turns out, I didn’t hate it. And it gave me the boost of inspiration I’ve been needing for longer than I care to admit.

Have you ever taken an inspiration Vacation?

Have you ever been on an Inspiration Vacation…planned or inadvertently?

What do you do when you’re feeling stuck and unmotivated?

I’d love to know xo…

p.s. The pink wall mural is called Divine Feminine and is by C. Finley.
