Leaving New York is always hard, but this time it was harder than expected in no small part to all of the great food we consumed while there (er, I mean we’ll really miss our friends and all the culture, er…).

Since it’s Thanksgiving Week, I’d thought now would be the perfect time to share my favorite New York eats with you. My own Best Of New York Dining, if you will indulge me and your taste buds. From New York classics to those hidden neighborhood gems, a delectable guide to eating in the Big Apple.

First up, a hotly contested category: Best Burger. Well, to be more specific, Best Veggie Burger, as I can only take my hubby’s word for the beef option (his word: yum!).

And the award for Best (Veggie) Burger goes to…Shake Shack’s ‘Shroom Burger.

Believe me when I tell you that you won’t even miss the meat, as the scrumptious crisp-fried portobello ‘shroom burger is stuffed with cheese. Molten cheddar and muenster cheese that oozes out with each bite to be exact (topped off with lettuce, tomato and Shack sauce). It’s so good, I had it three times in 10 days (um, for research purposes?). That should say it all right there, and might also provide some insight into why I might keel over of a heart attack before my 32nd birthday.

The chocolate shakes and fries are great too. Plus, for New York, it’s a bargain meal. The original Madison Square Park location still has lines around the block (yes, even in these wintry temps; you can see them for yourself on the Shack Cam), but the new Upper West Side location never takes more than a few minutes. Plus, you can even order beer and wine, though I save my calories for the shakes.
